Description
Standard Bronze Turkeys
The Standard Bronze Turkey has a copper or bronze colored metallic sheen. This Heritage turkey breed originated from crossing domestic turkeys brought to the Americas by European colonists with eastern wild turkeys. The Bronze turkey has been one of the most popular turkey varieties for most of American history, and was recognized by the American Poultry Association in 1874.
Babies are tan and dark brown with irregular stripes down head and back.
Unlike the Broad-Breasted Bronze Turkey, the Standard Bronze Turkey is one-third the size of the broad-breasted variety, naturally mating, long-lived, and slow-growing. The Standard Bronze is today very rare, having been left behind by the turkey industry in favor of the fast-growing production variety until recently due to renewed interest in Heritage breeds and survivability..
