They are always much heavier than they look. Baby chicks, all purebred and from the same strain, can vary greatly in color from a light reddish buff to a darker reddish brown with dark markings on the head and sometimes a dark stripe on the outer edge of the back.

Description

The Lemon Cuckoo Niederrheiner is our newest dual-purpose chicken breed. Hailing from Germany, the Niederrheiner is a great choice for both meat and eggs. While technically an auto-sexing breed, the colorations at day-old are not easily distinguishable. The combination of their lemon-buff coloring and white barring make this a very pretty bird. 

The Niederrheiner is a large fowl — much like our other German breed, the Bielefelder — and we are confident that these will make good meat birds and good layers. Averaging 200 light-brown eggs per year, these hens are no slouches.

What may be our favorite aspect of this breed is their easy, friendly nature. A family favorite, whether its in your yard or on the table.
